One thing pretty much all middle-aged men have in common is a hatred for growing older. They grimace at every mention of their current age or how old they are going to be on their next birthday. Sure, growing older is inevitable, but it doesn’t make it any easier. It is a matter of growing old gracefully. It is a matter of being grateful for what you have, whether that be children, grandchildren, a fancy sports car or just wisdom you wish you’d had when you were younger.

But that isn’t all you should be thankful for because you should also be thankful you have your health. Our bodies are all we have. They are the temples in which we live and pray. But age almost always starts to affect our bodies, which is why it is so imperative we take great care of them and make sure there are no issues that need to be addressed.

However, while it is never an easy thing to admit to, getting checked is something all middle-aged men must get into the habit of doing because, well, middle-age is a time in one’s life when nasties start introducing themselves. In fact, middle-aged men are highly prone to cancer and, when it comes to cancer, it is far better to prevent than aid.

As such, we are going to highlight what the four most common cancers among middle-aged men are. That way you will be able to pop along to the doctor and ask them to perform a screening. These will maximize your chances of catching any signs of the big C early and allow your body to remain that much more healthy for that much longer.

Prostate Cancer

This is at the top of the podium when it comes to common cancers in middle-aged men. It is the one most men are at risk of and the second biggest killer, and if that hasn’t grabbed your attention and made you consider how to protect yourself, then we don’t know what will. Almost 30,000 men die every year because of this cancer. What’s worse, prostate cancer almost always makes its move without any symptoms. Luckily, the treatment processes have advanced a huge amount in recent years, so what was once a matter of surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy, can now be addressed in numerous ways such as HIFU options, which is a high-intensity ultrasound.

However, that doesn’t mean you should relax and no longer care about reducing your risks of falling prey to this killer. Colon Cancer

This is the third most common cancer among men in the 50s. In fact, it strikes about 53 in every 100,000 men. Now that may not sound like a terrifying figure when put in those terms, but what about if we told you over 28,000 men die from colon cancer every year. Unfortunately, the symptoms are so subtle with this, it can be something as slight as stomach ache, which is why it is so important you get screened regularly from the age of 50. The reason for this is simple; colon cancer is one of the ones that can be caught early and dealt with swiftly.

Of course, aside from having regular screenings, there are ways to reduce your chances of getting this cancer, most of which revolve around a healthy lifestyle. It is a matter of exercising regularly and eating healthily. Staying at a healthy and constant weight is also beneficial to your protection. The other two major contributing factors are smoking and drinking, so if you can stop. If you can’t, then drastically reduce your habit.

Lung Cancer

This may not affect anywhere near as many men as prostate cancer, but it remains the biggest killer. We know this probably isn’t news to you, and that any smoker is typically resilient when it comes to quitting smoking. They tend to ignore the facts out of elective ignorance. But almost 100,000 men die a year because of smoking. What’s worse, by the times the symptoms start to develop it can be too late.

That is why it is so important that you get screened immediately and annually, and to protect yourself by quitting smoking, and indeed avoiding secondhand smoke. Luckily, there is more help out there than ever when it comes to quitting, whether it be substituting your nicotine needs with patches or gum, or using a vape. It could even be that you seek therapy, such as hypnosis. The first step is taking that first step, and understanding that by not smoking you are drastically improving your chances of living a longer and healthier life.

Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is on the rise for numerous reasons. Part of it is to do with globalization and the ease and cost-effectiveness now attached to traveling to warmer climates. The other reason is more closely aligned with our united-disrespect for the environment and thus the erosion of the ozone layer. In fact, in some parts of the world, the ozone layer hasn’t just been thinned, it has been corroded away. As such, it is crucial you screen yourself regularly. This could be the inspection of moles and freckles, or checking your scalp and the soles of your feet for any signs of melanoma, or any sores and lumps. You know your body better than anyone, so keep an eye on it.

In terms of reducing your chances of getting melanoma, you should avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and protect your skin with lotions. Sunscreen is the single best preventative measure you can take and is especially important if you are fair-skinned. As a tip, don’t just look at the SPF on the bottle but look at the star-rating on the reverse side. These will give you both a UVA and UVB rating.
