Traveling is never easy. Traveling with kids, on the other hand, can be complicated and every bit a hustle. However, all it takes is proper planning to avoid the hustle and make the moment pleasant. Here are seven must-know tips for traveling with kids.
1. Leave home early
You will have to travel by road to get to the airport before you travel by air. This, too, will be a bit of a hustle that may delay your journey there. As such, it would be prudent to leave home earlier than usual to account for any time lost. You have to be at the airport early to organize your luggage and prepare your kids for the security checks.
Also, keep your ears open for early boarding calls. It will be prudent to board early so that you may stash the luggage without much trouble and strap in your kids.
2. Pack only what you need
Kids tend to be very attached to their stuff, and if they had their way they would carry it all. However, too much luggage would be an obstacle every step of the way: it will take time to pack and pass through security checks, it will be tiring, and it will cost you more than usual. As such, you will have to pack only what you need.
You can save space and stay organized when packing by using a packing cube. Packing cubes are designed to hold more luggage and separate it to stay better organized. They also come in many colors, shapes, and sizes and your kids will love theirs.
3. Bring toys
Kids lack the patient for many things let alone long, boring flights. As such, you need something to keep them busy and entertained as much as possible, and what better than their favorite toys?
However, do not overdo it by bringing the whole collection; this will make an otherwise fun playtime clumsy. Your kids may not help themselves if you bring too many toys, and this only leaves you with the job of holding them together.
4. Have ‘the talk’ before you leave
Kids travel extensively nowadays, and some know all the rules and loops of getting through the airport. Those that do not, however, can find the whole process confusing and irritating. As such, it is necessary to prepare them psychologically by letting them know all the ‘fun’ things you will do before and after boarding the flight.
This will not only prepare the kids psychologically but also save you a lot of time that would be lost getting your kids organized in the last minute.
5. Stay together
Kids are a mischievous and adventurous lot. They easily get distracted as they play, and they can easily lose sight of the family especially in crowded places. As such, it is your responsibility to keep an eye on them to ensure they never stray far. You will have to be very stern about this and ban any running games.
Airports are crowded places, and they are a common conduit for child smugglers. As such, keep your kids safe by keeping them close to you.
6. Pack snacks and baby food
The munchies will definitely kick in as you travel, whether by road or by air. When that happens, it pays to have some snacks close by if you do not wish to deal with the nagging and restlessness. There is no option if you are traveling with a toddler as he/she has to feed every now and then. As such, be sure to bring snacks and baby foods.
Pack as much food as you may need to keep everyone satisfied. Additionally, keep it close by so you do not have to reach for the luggage whenever the kids want a bite.
7. When driving, it is all about space
If you are planning on traveling by road, then there are some things to take into consideration. For starters, you will need a big car especially if you have a big family; the constrained space can be tiring. Additionally, you need something to keep the kids busy: toys, music, movies, and anything rather than keeps them occupied. Finally, you should check to see that the tank is full especially if you are traveling long distance.
Keep in mind that the safety of your trip is paramount. Stay safe with your family.
