As you probably already know, the way technology has advanced in the last few years is extraordinary. There are so many things that you are able to do online now, and while precautions are there to keep us safe and protected – we are also left at a greater risk too, because people are getting more and more intelligent and are able to work the systems to their advantage. This is why it is so important that you know how to stay safe.
There are plenty of threats out there, from all over the world, and from having clever technology, they are able to work their way into your lives.
So what can you do?
Don’t give out personal information
You should all know this by now, and yet for some reason, people continue to air their personal information out online. While you may think that putting your bank details on Twitter is outrageous – so is putting your phone number on Facebook. Just because you don’t think that it seems as important – it is. There are criminals out there that await this kind of information, just so that they can then hack into your system and find out even more. The same goes for uploading pictures to Instagram. Don’t tag where you are, because anyone may be waiting for that little slip up so that they can wait outside for you.
Be careful of the strangers
Sure, this is easier said than done, because a big part of being social online is engaging with new people. So this doesn’t necessarily mean you should never connect with people, it just means you need to be a wise judge of character. While this may be a little difficult because you haven’t met them in person and can’t read their body language, you can still judge a situation by the direction the conversation is going in. There are evil people out there that will prey on others and make them a victim of abuse by constantly sending them hateful messages, threatening them, telling them they’re ugly and should disappear, etc. This is now starting to be known as an online hate crime, and laws are being put in place to be able to arrest the people behind this, as it can go so far as ending in suicide because the victim is suffering from so much abuse.
Although you may want to imagine that you live in a world that is full of peace and beauty (and there’s nothing wrong with that!), but you need to be smart too. Unfortunately, there are many bad people out there that have no other life, but to ruin others. So they sit around online all day waiting for people to mess up, and that’s when they strike. So don’t let yourself be a victim like that. Don’t put yourself in that kind of situation where you’re left vulnerable, because you know better. You don’t have to be a savvy tech person with super high-security programmes and passwords – you just need to be smart.
