Moving Abroad For Love? Read This First!

We’ve all been there before. Someone new and exciting comes along, we end up falling for them, and they completely sweep us off our feet. If you have ever been in love, you will certainly know that feeling!

But how far would you be prepared to go for love? For most of us, we won’t ever need to change our lives too much. However, if you have ever fallen for someone who comes from a different country, your new love could end up turning your life upside down. For instance, would you ever be prepared to move to a foreign country to follow your sweetheart? If you end up falling for someone who lives abroad then you might have to!

Moving abroad might sound like a fantastic idea at the time, but are you sure it is something that will suit you in the long term? There are certainly a lot of difficult questions you will need to ask yourself to help you figure this out. To help you make this huge decision, here are some points you need to remember.

This Isn’t A Decision To Rush Into

When we are head over heels in love with someone, we often get carried away and agree to do some very stupid things. Make sure that agreeing to move abroad isn’t one of them though! It’s a good idea to give yourself a couple of months to think this over before you commit to a move. Otherwise, you could end up waking up one morning in a foreign country and wishing you were back home! If you both decide that trying to do a long-distance relationship isn’t for either of you, and neither of you is sure about moving to be with the other, then you need to ask yourself whether the relationship really has a future.

Remember The Language Barrier

If your partner comes from an English-speaking country, then you don’t really have to worry about this point. For those of you who are contemplating moving to a country whose language you don’t speak, you need to consider how you will cope with the language barrier. It could have a significant impact on you working over there, for example. Plus, even just going about your day-to-day life could be made a whole lot harder if you can’t understand people. Ideally, you need to be prepared to learn the language once you are there. Not only is this useful for practical reasons, but you will also find that it greatly helps you to settle in and make the country your home. Ideally, you should take a language course before you move out there so that you have some basic understanding of the language before you arrive.

Are You Even Allowed To Move?

Depending on the country you intend to move to, you may be required to get permission to move permanently. This will all depend on the law of your destination, as each country has its own asylum laws. For example, the US has a very strict immigration and asylum law, and you can learn about it here. It is crucial that you thoroughly research the law in the country to which you intend to move as there will be various criteria that you need to meet. For instance, some countries might require you to know a basic amount of the language before you are eligible for a visa. Others might request you to pass a citizen’s test. Even though some countries will let spouses easily get a visa if their partner is from the country, other nations don’t make things so easy. So, be prepared to do a lot of homework to ensure that you know exactly what you need to do to get a visa if you really are serious about moving for love.

Will You Be Able To Keep Your Independence?

Hopefully, you will be able to work in your new country. You will need to double check this as some spouse visas don’t let the foreign individual work while in the country. If you are unable to work, will you be able to survive without a salary? But it isn’t just the money that should worry you. Many people find that they don’t feel very independent when they aren’t working, as they will just have to stay at home all day. This can be very isolating, which some people struggle to deal with. You should also think about how not working can impact your social life. Lots of people work for social reasons and make many friends out of their work colleagues. If you do not have this opportunity, you may really struggle to make any new friends.

Is This Going To Be A Forever Move?

Are you really prepared to spend the rest of your life in this new country? If you want to marry your partner and have children, then it sounds like this is certainly going to be a very permanent move. After all, it could be extremely difficult to move a family back home with you, especially if your children take citizenship of the country in which they were born. You might then have trouble getting them a passport for your own country. But that will, again, depend on each individual country’s asylum laws. Also, you will find it extremely difficult to move back home once your children have started schools as they will need to fit into a different country’s education system.

Be Honest About This Decision

Before you do make this important decision, you need to be honest about your reasons behind it. Are you sure that you aren’t just choosing to move abroad to be with someone because you are scared of ending up alone? That certainly isn’t a good enough reason to move abroad for love, as there will still be lots of chances of you finding love in your home country. You maybe just need to start looking in different places! You also need to figure out who you are making this decision for. If you are only moving abroad because it is what your partner wants, you should probably think again. After all, you need to be sure that the big move will benefit you as well. If there are some fantastic opportunities waiting for you in the new country, then you should obviously grab this chance to start a new life with both hands. These great opportunities include things like better job prospects and an improved standard of life. However, if it looks like you might be worse-off after moving, then it could be a better idea to stay in your home country.

Are You Sure Your Partner Is Who They Say They Are?

If you have known your partner for a while and met in traditional circumstances, then you probably don’t have to worry about this point. However, if you met online, then this is very important as more and more individuals are using online dating websites to scam unwitting people. There are various things to take note of when you are chatting to someone online. For instance, they should have a few different photos on their profile. You can always do a reverse Google search of these images to make sure that they haven’t simply used someone else’s image. Another sign that someone is not who they say they are is if they suggest that they are very serious about you after just a short time. Generally speaking, it is sensible to meet someone in real life before committing to them. It is also especially important that you meet up a few times before deciding to move abroad with them. This will give you plenty of opportunities to ask them about themselves face to face and to figure out whether or not they really are a genuine person.

What Will You Do If You Breakup?

Not everything lasts forever, and you need to have some idea of what you will do if the relationship were to break down. Some individuals might decide to move back home if they ever split up with their partner, but this might not be so easy if you have children together. You might have a legal struggle splitting up your children from their other parent. Plus, the kids might not want to leave the country especially if they were born there. Some people choose to stay in the new country for the sake of their kids. Even some individuals who do not have children decide to stay there is they enjoy their new life. You need to make sure that you have a clear plan in place just in case you do ever split up from your partner. Otherwise, you might end up stuck in a foreign country without any support.

As you can see, there are lots of different questions and points that you need to think about before you commit to moving abroad for love. Once you think things through carefully, you will be able to come to the best decision for you.
